Afghan Taliban and Pakistani Forces Claim Numerous Deaths in Fresh Border Clashes

Border Conflict Intensify
Islamabad Armed Forces and Afghan Government Blame Each Other of Starting Assaults in the Afghan Border District of Spin Boldak

New hostilities broke out along the Pakistan-Afghanistan frontier early on Wednesday, with each side accusing the other of initiating deadly confrontations.

Pakistan's military announced that its troops had eliminated "15-20 Afghan Taliban" and wounded many in the Spin Boldak border district.

A Afghan authorities representative claimed that twelve Afghan civilians had been fatally struck and over a hundred wounded by Pakistani firing. He further stated that numerous military personnel had been lost their lives. None of the alleged fatalities could be independently confirmed.

Hostilities between the neighbouring countries has escalated since blasts shook Afghanistan last week, which the Afghan capital blamed on Islamabad. The Taliban deny claims that it is harboring armed groups aiming at Pakistan.

Social Media and Armed Confrontations

The opposing forces are not only battling for the upper hand on the frontier, but also on social media, attempting to convince the public that their faction is causing greater losses.

The latest clashes follow severe border confrontations over the past few days, when the Taliban claimed to have eliminated 58 members of the Islamabad's armed forces and Islamabad reported it killed 200 "militants and affiliated insurgents". The claimed casualty figures announced by each side could not be independently verified.

Several days of fragile calm that had lasted since the recent days were shattered on Wednesday morning.

On-the-Ground Reports and Consequences

Footage purportedly of the conflict and its aftereffects have been shared online and on messaging groups, including footage said to be of those deceased and grainy shots from low-light cameras purporting to be of guard positions demolished. These recordings have not been authenticated.

A informant in the border area in Afghanistan stated that fighting erupted at around 04:00 local time (11:30 p.m. GMT on Tuesday). Another local in the district, who lives about a short distance away from the border crossing, said that "very heavy clashes continued for almost several hours".

"I see drones and fighter planes soaring over us, some of our family members are injured," they said.

A doctor in one of the medical facilities in the region reported that he tallied "seven fatalities and 36 wounded transported to the medical center", including men, women and children.

The situation were "tense" and more victims were being taken to hospital, he said.

Displacement and Global Reactions

A regional Taliban official in the area stated that "hundreds of households have been displaced since the previous evening due to the heavy fighting". He said they were on "high alert" after a few Taliban posts were targeted by Pakistani jets. He further indicated that they had the remains of two Pakistani military members.

In a distinct night-time clash on the north-western frontier, the Pakistani military claimed that 25 to 30 militant and Pakistani Taliban fighters were "believed" to have been eliminated.

The hostilities have prompted appeals for reduced tensions from other countries including Beijing and Russia, as well as a proposal from the American leader that he could intervene to facilitate a ceasefire.

On Wednesday, a UN official, United Nations representative on the situation of civil liberties in Afghanistan, posted on a social media platform that he was "very worried" by reports of civilian casualties and evacuations because of the fighting.

"I call on all parties to practice maximum restraint, protect non-combatants, and abide by global regulations," he wrote.

Long-Standing Disputes

Pakistan has long alleged the Afghan Taliban of permitting the Pakistani militants to function from their land and battle against the Islamabad government in an effort to enforce a rigid Islamic-led system of governance.

The Taliban leadership has always denied these allegations.
